Joseph Wright and the Lure of Italy at Derby Museums

18 March – 12 June 2016

Derby Museum and Art Gallery will present an exhibition drawing on Joseph Wright of Derby’s formative years in Italy, which marked a personal and professional turning point.

‘Joseph Wright and the Lure of Italy’ will explore the Grand Tour of the 18th and 19th  centuries through the experiences of Derbyshire travellers, including Joseph Wright himself. Treasures from some of the county’s greatest houses and families have been generously lent for the exhibition, including works by 18th century master Pompeo Batoni, and other early Italian Renaissance artists, which will sit alongside Derby Museums’ own rich collection. Some of these items will be on public show for the first time.

A Collaboration with Turner Prize-winning artist Simon Starling will provide a contemporary perspective and dialogue with Wright’s work, and is directly linked to Nottingham Contemporary’s solo exhibition of the artist’s work.
